What is work-based learning?

Work based learning is a way of working towards recognised vocational qualifications  such as an NVQ through on-the-job training with an employer. This will:

  • allow you to earn money
  • gain a recognised qualification
  • improve your skills
  • build up knowledge

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the most common way to get into work-based learning and are for young people who have a specific career in mind. Apprenticeships are for young people who wish to learn and develop skills whilst earning money. They are designed to give you ‘hands-on’ skills and experience as well as the underpinning theory, which you will need to progress within that career. The main principle is that you learn on the job by building up your knowledge of skills. You can find out more by reading our article on Apprenticeships.

Jobs with training

When you start to job hunt it’s important to think about a job with training. A job with training can help you:

  • learn to do your job
  • gain qualifications
  • move on in your career
  • earn more money in the future
  • get a sense of achievement

Posted - 10:36, 14 Oct 2010

Hi thanks for getting in touch. We would suggest you visit www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u/ and search for ‘police’ to gather an idea of the types of duties, personal qualities and entry routes into a career as a police officer. You can also visit our careers library www.essexconnexions.co.uk/careers-library section on ‘Security and Armed Forces’ for information, videos and links to websites that will provide you further information about a career in this profession. Next March/April, providing you are in year 11 and you meet other certain criteria you may be eligible to apply to be a police cadet. Visit http://www.essex.police.uk/ for further information. Posted - 10:53, 25 Feb 2011

Hi thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately there is currently no opportunities for a trainee printer in the Basildon, Brentwood and surrounding areas. Do keep checking the vacancies listed on our site. From the left hand navigation select ‘Job Search’ and then ‘Search for Local Jobs’. You can search for Apprenticeships (a type of work-based learning) from the National Apprenticeship Service http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk. You will need to register on this site in order to apply. As of toady (25/02/11) there is an IT Practitioner Apprentice post in Billericay advertised on this site, which may be of interest. In order for you to get the best support, with job hunting and applications speak with a Connexions Personal Adviser at either the Brentwood or Basildon Centres. You can find opening hours and contact details from the ‘Connexions Centre’ link from the left hand navigation. The team at these centres look forward to supporting you, Connexions.
