Application forms

Some employers prefer applicants to complete an application form online, or on paper, rather than requesting a CV. This makes it easier for recruiters to compare candidates and quickly identify those who evidence the skills, qualifications and experience they require.

Tips for success

  • Copy paper application forms and practice filling them in several times. If completing a form online, type your answers in a text editing program first, such as Microsoft Word.
  • Read any instructions before you start writing or typing.
  • Spell and grammar check your application prior to finalising your copy. Ask someone else to read over your application.
  • Fill in all sections, or put ‘Not applicable’ if necessary.
  • Link your answers to the job description.
  • Attach a covering letter or email as appropriate.
  • Keep a copy of your final form as you may be asked follow-up questions in an interview about what you wrote in your application.
  • Don’t lie or exaggerate.
  • Make sure your form is returned before the deadline!
