Physical abuse is when someone is:
- hit or punched
- shaken excessively
- pushed/thrown around
- suffocated
- kicked
- burnt or scalded
Signs that a person might be being physically abused are marks on their body such as bruises, cuts and burn marks.
Emotional abuse can include:
- name calling
- being threatened
- being made fun of
- being made to feel small
- being made to feel worthless or inadequate
It is not always easy to identify emotional abuse but the effects can seriously affect your behaviour.
Sexual abuse is being pressured, tricked or forced to take part in any kind of sexual activity. This can include:
- kissing
- being touched in the genitals or breasts
- being forced to touch another person’s genitals or breasts
- being encouraged or forced to watch pornography
- being forced to have any form of sexual activity
Neglect is the lack of care for a person and this can include:
- being poorly clothed
- being poorly fed
- regularly being left alone
- not being educated
