this is really helpful! i'm looking for a job at the moment and i wasnt completely sure where to find one! thanks connexion, it's answered many queries that i had in mind. thank you again. one question though! what jobs could you do to be invloved with law and politics and how much is the pay?

Posted - 03:24, 04 Jun 2008

As a young person in Essex there are many ways you can become involved in politics, one of which is the Young Essex Assembly, to find out more about this and other voluntary opportunities call into your local Connexions Centre and speak with a Personal Adviser. They can give you specific information on opportunities in your area. More information about the Young Essex Assembly will be appearing on our site in the coming weeks - so keep checking. For advice on careers using politics and/or law a good website is www.fasttomato.com, the database holds lots of information on different careers and expected salaries. You can also take a look at our Careers library for useful websites offering further information. The link is available from our homepage. Alternatively call into your local Connexions Centre where Personal Advisers will be available to provide specific employment information on vacancies in your area. Connexions

You should have a Connexions Personal Adviser based at your school and you can arrange to talk to them about finding a part time job. They may know of organisations locally that you could approach directly for part-time work. Alternatively you can speak to a Connexions Personal Adviser in your nearest Connexions Centre. There are lots of different jobs that you can do such as fruit picking or delivering newspapers and you can read more about the types of jobs in our article about ‘working under 16’ which you can find in the navigation on the left under ‘Job Search’. Best of luck Connexions

Hiya.. I'm only 13 and i'm saving up some money but pocket money isn't really enough for how much i would like to save up for. I was thinking of doing the paper round, but i am not particularly interested in doing the paper round. I need some suggestions on jobs i can do? Thankyouu :)

Posted - 09:23, 27 Jan 2009

Hi, thanks for your comment. I would suggest that you ask in local convenience stores, paper shops or hairdressers to see if they have any jobs that they can offer you. It is important that once you have been offered a job that your employer contacts the child employment team (01245 436743). This is to organise a work permit for you and to ensure that you’re working in a safe environment. Best of luck Connexions

Hi im 12 years old but turning 13 in september but im not really interested in doing paper round or asking around for jobs, but I need to be alerted in any vacancies for like baby sitting because in my local area there isnt much.

Posted - 09:10, 24 Feb 2009

Hi thanks for your comment. Until your 13th birthday you are not legally allowed to work (with the exception of acting). Connexions advertise job vacancies for young people who are above school leaving age. We understand that there are occasions when young people would like to earn more money. As you are under 13 I suggest you speak to your parent/guardian about the possibility of doing more around your home in exchange for pocket money. Connexions

Hi thanks for your comment. There are many voluntary opportunities that you can get involved with such as DofE (www.dofe.org), where you will learn new skills and improve key skills such as team working. These are skill that you will be able to evidence and will enhance your CV, making it is more favourable to employers. You can visit www.vinspired.com to search for a range of volunteering opportunities available in your area. There may be opportunities to volunteer or undertake work experience at your local care home and together with a parent or carer you could ask if they have any opportunities. This could lead to part-time employment. Why not check out Careers Library section on healthcare. You will find a tab to this towards the top right of our homepage. Here you will find useful links and information about working within healthcare. Dagenham is unfortunately not part of the catchment area Essex Connexions covers, however I would suggest you speak to a Connexions Adviser based in your school or at your nearest centre. You can search for your nearest centre by visiting www.connexions-direct.com and clicking on local services. Best of luck Connexions

Hi thanks for your comment. At 14 it can sometimes be difficult to find employment due to the number of laws in place to protect your well-being and at times this makes you unsuitable for the needs of an employer. Try not to get disheartened and keep asking around. Try asking at newsagents for paper rounds or in your local shop. There other ways to save money for the things you want, such as through budgeting. You can find more information under our ‘money’ section found from the left hand navigation. Best of luck Connexions.

Posted - 12:13, 18 May 2009

Hi, thanks for your comment. At 14 it can sometimes be difficult to find employment because of the legislation in place to protect your well-being. Having said this you should keep trying. Unfortunately you have visited the Connexions website for the Essex area which doesn’t cover the region in which you live. If you visit www.connexions-direct.com and click on their local services tab you should be able to contact the Connexions service in your area. Best of luck Connexions.

Im a 15 yr old girl I want to earn some money so I can pay back the £50 I owe my sister & save up for when I am older. Posted - 09:47, 08 Jun 2009

Hi thanks for your comment. It is good to hear that you are eager to pay back your sister. Unfortunately Essex Connexions does not cover the area that you live in. Our nearest centres are in Loughton and Brentwood. There are Connexions services operating closer to you and you can find them by visiting www.connexions-direct.com and clicking on the local services tab, which is on the left hand side of the homepage. An adviser in your nearest centre will have a knowledge of employers in your local area so should be able to assist. Best of luck job hunting, Connexions.

Hi, Im 15 and i have been looking for a job in the Tendring area for a while now, do you know of any places that need people. Thanks.

Posted - 03:39, 20 Jul 2009

Hi both, thanks for your comments. At 13 you are under school leaving age and assuming you are 15 and have not left school you will both be restricted on the types of work that you can do. I suggest, with the accompaniment of your parents/guardians you approach local convenience stores, newsagents, riding stables, vet surgeries and such like. At your local Connexions Centre (which for Tendring is 74 Station Rd, Clacton-on-Sea and Basildon, 16-20 Southernhay) you can speak with a personal adviser who may know of local organisations which are more willing to employ a young person under school leaving age and give you a more localised view of the types of organisations to approach. Best of luck, Connexions

how much do you get paid

Posted - 01:25, 25 Aug 2009

I am 15, nearly 16 but I got my national insurance number, does this mean I can get a job even though I am 15? I know without NI you can get some jobs but I am lead to believe with my NI number, I can get anything I want.

Posted - 04:12, 25 Aug 2009

National Insurance Numbers and cards are automatically issued when you turn 15 years and 9 months. Receiving a National Insurance card does not necessarily mean that you are no longer bound by the Child Employment Laws outlined above. These laws are applicable until you reach mandatory school leaving age (MSLA) and there is no National Minimum Wage in-place for a young person under the age of 16. MSLA is the last Friday in June in the academic year of your 16th birthday. This means that for some young people, depending on when your birthday falls, you could be aged 15. If you have not yet received a National Insurance card soon after reaching 15 years and 9 months, you can contact the National Insurance Registration Helpline on 0845 915 7006. Connexions PA

Posted - 10:17, 20 Nov 2009

Congratulations on your forthcoming birthday. Yes, you can work part-time but there are restrictions in place to protect your well being until you reach official school leaving age, which is the last Friday in June of the academic year that you turn 16. You can read the hours you can work at weekends from our article above. For more information, advice and support speak to your Connexions personal adviser in school or contact the relevant child employment team (numbers in the helplines above). Best of luck Connexions

Hi, we’re pleased to hear that you have made a decision on the kind of career you would like to go into once you leave school. As you are still at school you could talk to the staff at school to see if you can undertake an alternative education programme, this may involve some work experience, a college placement and a limited number of GCSE’s. Some salons take on young people to help with washing hair and keeping the salon tidy, you can approach salons with a parent/carer and find out if they need a junior. As you are under school leaving age you and any potential employer will have to abide by the restrictions detailed above, to protect your well-being. When you leave school you can apply for college courses or apprenticeships, Connexions can help and advise on these courses, please call into your local Connexions centre for more information. Our careers library (available from the top left corner of our homepage) has a section of useful websites providing information about careers working in a salon. Best of luck Connexions

Hiii Im 15 andd i need a job, is there any jobs available in westcliff i need one soon as not too bothered what it is please reply as soon as Thanks hanah ..

Posted - 11:44, 02 Feb 2010

Hi thanks for your comment. You can’t work in a factory or a kitchen, generally anywhere where which could involve contact with harmful chemicals, knives or dangerous machinery. You are also not permitted to undertake any work that involves working at heights or involves collecting money. Generally independent shops are more likely to employ someone under 16. Try to look for paper rounds, waitressing jobs or assisting at a hair salon or a vets. You may be able to do unofficial jobs for your friends and family such as gardening, babysitting and car washing in exchange for money. Hope this helps, Connexions

Posted - 09:59, 04 Feb 2010

Hi, glad to see that you are interested in the world of work, unfortunately everyone is feeling the pinch due to the recession so part-time vacancies are not as available as they were. I would recommend approaching local shops, restaurants and local employers. Look in shop windows to see what part-time jobs are available. You may need to talk to a Connexions advisor if you are unsure of what kind of work you would like to do when you leave school. As you live in Westcliff you may want to visit the Focus Youth Centre, provided by Southend Borough Council, for further advice and support. Good luck with your future. Connexions

Hi, I'm nearly 14 and I want a job, but how do I find out my rights, and how do I get a job in the first place?

Can a 13 year old work on farms fruit picking ? if so which farms near tunbridge wells do so ?

Posted - 02:08, 29 Mar 2010

Hi at 13 you are allowed to undertake light duties in agriculture and horticulture so fruit picking should be ok, but your employer will need to check with the Child Employment Team. The best thing to do, together with your parent carer, is to approach farms in your local area, to see if they have any work you could undertake. Best of luck Connexions

Posted - 02:13, 29 Mar 2010

Hi thanks for your comment. Hopefully the above article has given you some indication of your employment rights but if you have additional concerns you should contact the Child Employment Team (numbers above). Finding a job can be difficult but ask around, look at notice boards to see what is available. Best of luck Connexions.

Posted - 03:27, 18 Apr 2010

if we get our insurance number at the age of 16 then how do we get payment jobs at 14 ?

Posted - 01:07, 20 Apr 2010

Just before your 16th birthday you should receive a card with your National Insurance (NI) number on it. This is your personal account number. This number is needed for National Insurance Contributions (a form of tax) on earnings from the age of 16 (providing you are earning over a certain limit). Whilst you are under 16 you are exempt from this tax. NI contributions are paid to build up entitlement to certain benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance or to receive a state pension when you retire. You can read more about NI in our article on ‘Income tax and National Insurance’ found from the left hand navigation under ‘Money’. Connexions

i really cant find a job to do in clacton on sea, i really need one because i really need the money, nothings cheap these days. thank you, this websites been quite a good help(:

Posted - 09:09, 26 Apr 2010

Hi thanks for getting in-touch. With the current climate it can be difficult for anyone looking for a job so it is important that you remain positive. In Clacton-on-Sea I’d suspect there would be more jobs available in the approach to the summer months so there may be more opportunities towards the summer holidays. Speak to a Personal Adviser at the Clacton Connexions Centre as they should be able to advise you of the organisations to approach. Contact details available from the left hand navigation under ‘Connexions Centres’. There are other ways to be able to buy the things you want by managing your money more effectively. You may find our money articles (under ‘Money’ from the left hand navigation) useful. Best of luck Connexions.

Hi thanks for your comment and we can understand why you would be confused. You do need to be at least 13 before you can work for a number of reasons; to protect your safety and ensure it doesn’t affect your education. If you let us know the area of Basildon you live in the Essex Child Employment Team can talk to employers in the area in order to educate them of their responsibilities. Ensuring young people’s safety and well-being is protected. Talking with employers will help ensure young people remain safe and increase the number of opportunities for young people 13+ to work in a safe environment. where can i get a job around hornchurchh and romford in essex?

Posted - 09:33, 18 Jun 2010

Hi thanks for your comment. Choose your referees carefully, and get their permission before you include them on your CV. We recommend that you put at least one referee from your School/College/University and then a second from an employer. You may not have an employer that you can put down, don’t worry. In this scenario we suggest you put down someone who has known you for more then two years and will write you a professional reference; an example would be a family friend. If an employer requests a reference from one or both of your referees, the chances are you will never see what has been written. Unless it is a personal reference the likelihood is that it will only include standard information such as your attendance, length of service, salary and position. Therefore you should not worry about receiving a bad reference. Call into your local Connexions Centre for further advice and support. Best of luck Connexions.

hi, my brother told me that as his mate left school (age 16) he got paid money £95 a fortnight all the way up to when he started college, is this true? Can i get it? thank you

Posted - 01:47, 23 Jun 2010

Hi thanks for getting in contact. The likelihood is that your brother’s mate finished school and started an apprenticeship where he split his time between a work placement and college. This allowed him to learn and earn at the same time. Check out our article on apprenticeships for more information (available from the left hand navigation under ‘Work > Apprenticeships’). Alternatively call into your nearest Connexions Centre and speak with a Personal Adviser about the opportunities available to you. Hope this helps Connexions.

hi, am 13 and looking for a simple job in blackburn so i can earn my own money and stop relying on my parents, so i was wondering where i can get a job around this area?

Posted - 11:22, 08 Jul 2010

Hi thanks for your comment. It’s great to read that you want to be independent and earn your own money so you can afford the things you want. There are 9 real job areas that you can seek employment: Delivering papers and leaflets, office work, shop work, waitoring, hand car cleaning, jobs in horticulture and agriculture, domestic work in accommodation establishments, riding stables and at hairdressers. I would suggest you approach organisations in these areas with a parent or carer. Unfortunately you have come through to the Connexions service for the Essex area so for further information you will need to visit one of the local centres/offices in the Blackburn area and speak to a personal adviser. You can find details of your local centre or office by visiting the Connexions Direct website www.connexions-direct.com and clicking on the local services tab. Best of luck Connexions.

Hi, i'm 15 and i'm looking for a job over the summer to keep me occupied. Do you know of any job openings in Barking, Essex. Thanks =]

Posted - 11:35, 26 Jul 2010

Hi, I'm 14 years old, and looking to earn some money locally. I live in Dagenham and trying to find somewhere close for me and my friend (who is also 14) to get a job. Would we need to provide a CV? If so what needs to be on the CV? And where would we get a work permit? How do we know what places will accept 14 year olds? Thanks, from Dagenham Job Hunterr ;DD

Posted - 09:39, 27 Jul 2010

Hi all, it is good to read that you’re all proactively looking for a job to keep you occupied or to push yourselves further. Unfortunately Essex Connexions does not cover the areas of Barking, Dagenham or South London. I’d suggest you all visit your local Connexions centre as they will know of jobs available locally. To find your nearest centre visit: www.connexions-direct.com and click on the local services tab towards the bottom left hand corner. It’s always a good idea to leave a CV with any potential employers. A CV should include: contact details; a personal statement (this is a statement about your personality and what your career ambitions are); your education (subjects and predicted grades); details of all work experience and volunteering you have undertaken; employment history; achievements (such as Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, First Aid Certificate, School Prefect etc); a brief section on hobbies and interests and the names and contact details of two referees. A Personal Adviser in your local centre should be able to help get you started. It’s the responsibility of any potential employer to arrange your work permit with your local Child Employment Team. There are lots of different types of jobs young people under school leaving age can do. Visit our article on ‘Working under 16’ for more information. This available from the left hand menu under ‘Job Search’. Best of luck Connexions.

Hi I'm 13 and I live in Scotland and I am obsessed with horses. I really need a summer job in the stables but I'm bone dry, any one got any ideas??? Scottish Teen. XXX

Posted - 03:51, 09 Aug 2010

Hi thanks for getting in touch. We would suggest that you visit local stables with a parent and carer and ask if there are any opportunities. Paid or voluntary, it is all useful work experience and will demonstrate commitment and responsibility to any future employer. Often help is required in the winter months more so than the summer. By undertaking voluntary work at a yard it will provide valuable skills and experience which will help you progress in this industry after you finish your studies. If money is a real concern we would suggest you consider looking for a part-time job in different industries; this will give you new skills, abilities and access to more opportunities. You have to balance your commitments so it’s unlikely you could get a part-time job in another industry, volunteer at a yard, do well at school and have time to have fun, so you need to decide what’s most important. Talk to your parents or a Connexions PA at your nearest Connexions Centre for more advice. Connexions

Hello , Im 16 years old (Felmale) , ive just left school and would really like some help finding a job , i am going to college in september to study NVQ in Beauty Level 1/2 .. i am also intresed in Lifeguard as i enjoy my swimming Do You have any ideas ? :)x

Posted - 10:31, 18 Aug 2010

Hi thanks for getting in touch we would suggest that you look in local newspapers, shop windows and enquire at local hairdressers as it’s a good starting base for getting a job in beauty. Ask around people you know as they may know of someone looking for part-time work. It’s good to let people know you are looking. Ask at your local swimming pools about life guarding qualifications as these are usually done through them. If you’re near a town or shopping centre call in shops and ask if there are any vacancies. Try visiting websites of companies as most have a ‘careers’ or ‘job’ tab on them and many now ask for online applications. We believe KFC are recruiting at the moment in a few areas – applications via their website http://www.kfc.co.uk. Feel free to drop into your nearest Connexions Centre to talk about your future goals and how best you can achieve them through your learning choices and work experience. Best of luck Connexions PA

Hello. I am 14 years of age and would like to require volunteer work. However is it possible for an age of mine, to volunteer at hospitals/pharmacies/chemist? I have scanned through a series of websites, but none of which allowed anybody at the age of 14.

hello im twelve but want to start looking for jobs as i turn thirteen in a month but i would like something like babystting or a paper round thanx

Posted - 01:54, 26 Aug 2010

Hi thanks for your comment. You don’t need a work permit to undertaken babysitting and many young people make informal arrangements with family friends or neighbours to baby sit. Many newsagents who deliver newspapers/leaflets have waiting lists so get on these early so that when you do turn 13 you are first inline for any opportunities that do arise. Speak to a Connexions Personal Adviser linked to your school for further information and advice. Connexions

Posted - 09:55, 01 Sep 2010

Hi thanks for getting in contact, apologies for the delay. Many hospitals and pharmacies won’t take anyone at your age due to the nature of their work. It’s difficult to get experience in a laboratory or other industrial setting at this age because if you are not studying post-16 science courses you are unlikely to achieve the maximum benefit from such placements due to lack of understanding of the science involved. Hospitals also don’t normally take students of your age for work experience. I’d suggest you try asking in places such as Boots Chemists. You may not be able to get experience of dispensing drugs and medicines but you may get an understanding on how the process works the other side of the counter. Most likely duties will include dealing with deliveries, shelf stacking and stock rotation. Hope this helps and keep trying to find that suitable placement Connexions.

Hi Sophie, generally you will have to pay transportation costs yourself. You should weigh up how much you would have to pay for transportation against the amount you earn, to see if taken on a part-time job in an area you can’t walk or get a lift too is worth it. Connexions

If you’re under 16 this can be a little trickier, try putting together a letter saying who you are, what you are looking for and post together with your CV to potential placements. Posted - 09:40, 21 Feb 2011

Hi, without knowing the full circumstances it is difficult to comment. It may well be that for insurance purposes, or to protect your safety, you need to be supervised at all times. This should have been explained before being offered a job. You can call into your local Connexions Centre and speak confidentially with a personal adviser. Connexions

Posted - 09:41, 21 Feb 2011

Hi, we are pleased that you have decided to look at getting a job. Most employers ask young people to submit a CV and hand it into the store/company that you are interested in. You do not say what industry you want to work in? You could try High Street stores for vacancies although most are taking school leavers and will not employ anyone that is under 16. Some pubs/restaurants may employ you as waiter/waitress; you should contact these places directly with a parent/carer. You could also ask family friends, and neighbours to do dog walking, babysitting or car washing. If you are leaving school this summer you can look online at www.apprenticeship.org.uk for Apprenticeships. Alternatively visit www.stepon.org to see what courses are available. Don’t forget you can call into your local Connexions Centre for further advice and support. Good luck with your job search. Connexions.

Some newsagents have waiting lists so it is a good idea to get on explaining when you turn 13. Together with a parent/carer you could approach a local stable to see if there is any work you can undertake once you have turned 13. Best of luck, Connexions

Hello, I am a 14 year old boy from thurrock. I have been interested in a job for a long time now, as it would give money i would require to do certain things, like socialising with friends, and going to football matches, to list a few of the things. I am very responsible and sencible when i need to be, and I believe i could use those personal attributes towards a job. But i dont know where to start off, and who to contact about the situation, and i would be willing to do any job that has reasonable hours and pays. I hope you can give me decent advise as i would really appriciate that, many thanks, Kane :)

Hi thanks for getting in touch. There is no reason why you can’t baby-sit for family friends or neighbours in exchange for money. This is not classed as formal employment. It’s not limited to babysitting you could do jobs such a lawn mowing, car washing or dog walking. Until you officially leave school there are nine main types of employment which will require your employer to obtain a work permit for you. These include: non-residential car washing, domestic work, work in a salon (sweeping, washing hair), shop work, office work, horticulture or agriculture, working at a stables, waitoring and delivery of papers and leaflets. Hope this helps, Connexions

Im 13 and I need to find a job. what can I do? who can I see? And do I have to have average grades or something to get one??

Posted - 09:22, 08 Mar 2011

Hi thanks for your comment. It can be difficult finding employment until you have officially left school because of the health and safety regulations in place to protect your health and well-being. Although you are 16 you will need to have officially left school before these no regulations longer apply. The last Friday in June will be your official leaving date. It may be worth compiling a CV, a Connexions PA can help you with this, and leaving this with potential employers. Accompany this with a covering letter explaining when you officially leave school and the kind of work you are looking for. Our articles on CVs and Covering Letters will help (you will find these from the left hand navigation under ‘Work’, ‘Applying for work’). For further information and advice speak to your Connexions PA at your school or local centre. Best of luck Connexions.

Thanks for getting in contact. Although you are both 16 it depends if you have officially left school. If you have left school then the child employment rules do not apply but if you have not then they do and this restricts when, where and how long you can work for. You officially leave school on the last Friday in June in the academic year you turn 16. In addition to the information listed in this article there will be specific byelaws for the Manchester area so it is best to check with your local Education Authority. I’d advise you to speak to a Connexions PA at your school, if available or visit your local Connexions Centre/Careers agency. Visit www.connexions-direct.com to find details of services in Manchester. Best of luck Connexions.

Hi, you don’t need average grades, just perseverance and desire. Our article on ’Working under 16’ (‘Job search’ > ’Working Under 16’ from the left hand navigation) explains the job areas you should approach together with a parent/carer. Check noticeboards for opportunities and ask family friends or neighbours if there are any tasks you can undertake for money. Best of luck Connexions

Hello, I am 15 years old, and will be 16 in less than a month. I've been looking around for a job, but it's really difficult. I need some extra cash because the sixth form that I am going to won't help me at all with travel, and a bus pass will cost me almost £550! We just can't afford that kind of money, and my dad needs to take my sister to her school which is in the opposite direction every mornign too. Are there any places that would hire me?

Posted - 12:29, 27 Mar 2011

Hi, I am 15, and will be 16 in less than a month. I really need a job, as the sixth form I plan on going to won't help me with travel costs at all...In my area, that would mean I have to pay £560 almost. We can't afford that amount of money, so I was wondering, where I can get a job...and also is there any way that I could get help with travel fromsomewhere else like the council? Thanks r

Hi, glad to hear that you are looking for options for further education. It’s important that you visit your local Connexions Centre/One Stop Shop and speak to a Connexions Personal Adviser as they will be able to advise you on different funding streams available. You may be eligible for post 16 travel assistance visit www.essex.gov.uk for more detail and search for ‘post 16 transport’. Speak to the sixth-form/college as you may be able to get financial support from a discretionary learner support fund. There are other schemes like the young persons’ railcard which may help – Our article on ‘Rail offers’ can help (‘Transport’ > ‘Rail offers’ from the left hand navigation). Other alternatives in include thinking about undertaking an apprenticeship so you can learn and earn. Visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk to search for vacancies or visit our information article (‘Learning’ > ‘Qualifications’ > Apprenticeships from the left hand navigation). You can still look for a part-time job although this will be easier when you officially leave school on the last Friday in June. This is when the child employment laws will not restrict when, where and type of work you can undertake. Best of luck Connexions

Hi, this must be a tough time for you! It is a great idea and I admire you wanting to keep busy, however, unfortunately it is law that young people are not allowed to take up a full-time job until after the last Friday of June when in Year 11. You can though find a part time job – speak to a Connexions PA at your local Connexions centre/One Stop Shop. Are you getting any support from a professional regarding your education? Please do get in contact with us so that we as a service are able to support you fully! We look forward to seeing you soon. Connexions

Part-time work is a big commitment so you need to make sure that working does not adversely affect your education, family and social life. Work is not like a club that you can just join, it’s a big commitment. There are a range of jobs you can undertake, read our article on ‘Working under 16’ for additional information. You can always speak to a Personal Adviser based at your school for local opportunities. Connexions

Hi, there is no minimum wage for anyone working under mandatory school leaving age. Yes, work is a big commitment along side your education and free time, so you need to think carefully about what responsibilities you take on. You can ask at local farms, yards, shops and newsagents. There is a full list of jobs you might be able to do in our article on ‘Working under 16’ available from the left hand navigation under ‘Job Search’. Connexions

Hi, until officially leaving school, which is the last Friday in June in the academic year in which your turn 16, the child employment laws apply. In your circumstance it may be worth developing a CV together with a covering letter and leaving this with potential employers. Explain when you officially leave school, so if the employer has nothing suitable now, then they can contact you if an opportunity arises in the future. You can register to MyConnexions, from the blue tab on the homepage, to create a CV and a Covering Letter. Speak to a Personal Adviser for further help and support. Best of luck Connexions

Hi, I’m sorry to hear you did not find Connexions very helpful. As a service we do not collate information on part-time jobs for young people under mandatory school leaving age. We recognise the benefits of employment and work experience so advise you of the laws and procedures in place. We would advise you to keep trying check noticeboards and approach, with a parent or carer, newsagents, yards and farms as well as pubs/restaurants for waitoring opportunities. You can also undertake jobs for neighbours and family friends such as lawn mowing, baby sitting and car washing. Best of luck Connexions.

Posted - 09:22, 04 May 2011

Hi, it’s great to read your thinking about your long-term education. Speak to any neighbours or family friends with dogs or children about the possibility of dog walking or baby sitting. Together with a parent or carer speak to local newsagents and see if there are any paper rounds available. There may be waiting lists so the sooner you get your name down the better. Best of luck Connexions.

In Essex you can work at 13 years old but in other areas you may need to be 14 depending on the bye laws in place for that area. If you are interested in doing a paper round approach a local newsagent, together with a parent/carer, and enquire if there are any opportunities. There may be a waiting list, so it’s important to get your name down as soon as possible. Connexions

Hi thanks for getting in touch. When you get offered a job your potential employer will need to contact their Local Education Authority in order to sort out a work permit, based on the agreed duties. Our advice would be to approach local offices, yards, farms, newsagents and shops together with a parent or carer. Check noticeboards regularly to see if opportunities arise. You can also visit http://www.lbbd.gov.uk/children for details of young people’s services in Barking and Dagenham. Best of luck Connexions

Hi my name is deandra ..Im 13 years old ... Im looking for a job in hainualt chigwell kind of way .. i dont mind what job as long as im not relying on parents for money because i feel guilty using their hard earned cash to spend when im out with friends . . Also you talked about a work permit .. What is it ? Why do you need it? How do you get it ? I would also like to know if there is any like clubs and stuff that I could go to so when I need to write a CV i have quite a bit to write on it .. Hopefully you will reply .. Thanks Deandra x

Posted - 04:53, 20 May 2011

Hi from the age of 13 (14 in some areas of England) you can work part-time until you officially leave school when you can currently enter full-time employment. A work permit is arranged by a potential employer and they will contact the Local Education Authority to do this. It is needed to ensure your well-being. This means ensuring that you work: in a safe environment (so not at heights or with dangerous equipment) and appropriate hours (so not to adversely affect your education or so you are not working when it is dark). For your CV it helps if you can evidence working in the community or volunteering or anything which demonstrates motivation, commitment and personal development. Being a Guide or in the Cadets (Police, Army, St John Ambulance, Air, Sea etc.) shows commitment – remember to include brief details of any community activities or projects you have got involved with as a result of these. You may want undertake The Duke of Edinburgh Award www.dofe.org / www.essexdofe.org or a Prince’s Trust www.princes-trust.org.uk personal development programme. You may attend or help out at a youth club/local support group or be part of a church group where you can evidence community involvement or personal development skills. For assistance with writing a CV sign-up to MyConnexions www.myconnexions.co.uk or speak to a Personal Adviser based in your school. Hope this helps Connexions.

Hi you should approach local newsagents if you can and get your name down on any waiting lists. Be mindful that you are not limited to just paper rounds you can work in stables, farms, shops, offices and you can waitor/waitress as well, so there are alternatives if you are not successful with a paper round. I also have a national insurance number as i was disabled but been signed off :) i would really love you help so please get back to me :)

Posted - 04:36, 31 May 2011

Hi, as you are 15 and in Year 11 we take it you officially leave school on the last Friday in June 2011 which is the 24 June. You can start looking for full-time employment now but you can’t start until after this date. You need to start thinking about the sector you want to work within so that you can research what opportunities are out there. If you wish to go straight into employment look for a job with training as this will help you progress and at 16 the current minimum wage is £3.64 an hour. An apprenticeship is another option - this is where you will work for 4 days a week and attend training on the fifth day. This could be in college or by an assessor visiting the workplace. The good thing about this is that you are being paid to gain a professional qualification. At the moment apprentices are paid £2.50 an hour but the qualification is very valuable for future progression. Check out www.apprenticeships.org.uk Alternatively look for college courses and you could combine this with part-time employment. Speak to the Connexions service in Bury (http://www.connexions-bury.org.uk) for more advice. Good luck with your future, Connexions.

Hi, for a localised we would suggest you contact the Connexions/Careers service available in Bolton. Subject to bye laws and approval from your local Child Employment Office you may well be able to waitress/wash up in a restaurant so it worth approaching local venues together with a parent/carer. Our article on Working under 16 (a link to this article is available from the top of this page) under the heading ‘Types of jobs available’ should give you an indication of the kinds of organisations you should approach. Hi, thanks for getting touch. Although you are 16 please be aware that you will need to have officially left school before you can work full-time. This is the last Friday in June of the academic year in which you turn 16. It’s important that you have developed a CV – www.myconnexions.co.uk can help if you have not already created one. You should approach local companies and leave a CV so they can get back to you should something arise. You can also write to companies attaching your CV and again MyConnexions can help you with these letters. Check local papers and noticeboards for opportunities and keep trying. Posted - 11:20, 06 Jul 2011

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. You will need to check with the Child Employment Team/Officer at your Local Education Authority (LEA) as there may well be bye laws in place. In some areas of the country you may need to be 14 before you can work part-time - you will need to check. Once you have turned 13 and subject to any laws or bye laws, generally you can work: in horticulture, agriculture, at a yard, in local shops, for a newsagent delivering papers, in accommodation establishments doing domestic work, at residential hand car wash establishments, as a waitor or waitress, in a hair salon and at a local office. A work permit will need to be arranged by your employer with the LEA and your duties will be light. There are a wide range of opportunities so if there are no paper round vacancies, consider looking in to jobs in the areas listed. Best of luck Connexions.

hi i am 13 years old and i need to earn some money . i was also wondering what age you can babysit family or friends. i dont know where the conexions place is and we dont have anyone in school.

Posted - 10:47, 11 Jul 2011

As a guide you should be old enough to work part-time, in Essex this is from the age of 13. There is no law stating the minimum age to be able to babysit. No one under 16 can be charged with neglect or ill treatment for a child left in their care. This is ultimately the child’s parents’ responsibility. Our Connexions Centres and One Stop Shops are closing from the 31 July 2011 and this will also mean Personal Advisers will no longer be based in schools. In the meantime please contact your local Connexions Centre directly for opening hours. You can find these details from our left-hand navigation under ‘Connexions Centres’. Connexions.

I am 16 years old and am trying to find jobs for the summer holidays in London. I'm not having much luck and I'm not sure where to start. I have written my CV but haven't got my GCSE results yet so I wrote the predicted grades. My work experience was in a bank and I do have my National Insurance Number aswell. I'm not sure what kind of job to apply for or how to go about it. Any ideas/advice?

Posted - 02:29, 11 Jul 2011

Hi, finding a summer job in London can be hard to find. Usually people sign up for this type of work/placements from about April time. The best way to find out about jobs and work placements is through a speculative approach. This means putting a speculative letter together, stating who you are, what your looking for and highlighting your skills and interests together with your CV. You can get help producing a CV and covering letters by registering to MyConnexions (www.myconnexions.com). You can then send these to companies. You can get addresses from www.yell.com or by using a search engine such as Google (www.google.co.uk) and entering something like ‘companies near Liverpool Street’ or if there’s a specific area you’re interested in, put ‘media companies near Holborn’. Sites like http://jobseekers.direct.gov.uk and www.thisislondon.com/jobs all advertise jobs. One great way to securing an opportunity is to go up London with lots of copies of your CV with you and walk into places directly and introduce yourself – remember to record where you’ve been and take names and numbers so you can call them again later if you need too. Good Luck! Connexions.

Hi thanks for getting in touch. Speak to you Local Education Authority to understand what laws are in place in the area that you live, so that you can work out what employers you can approach and what roles you can undertake. After doing a quick internet search the following website http://www.careerswales.com may offer further information and support. Other ways to save money are by managing your money more effectively. Read our article ‘Managing Money’ (under ‘Money’ from the left-hand navigation). To re-enthuse yourself see if there are any local groups or any voluntary roles you can undertake to keep you active. This may be a local Guides group or air cadets. Best of luck Connexions.

Hi, it often pays to be proactive in these situations. With your parents and carers why don’t you make a list of local employers that offer the types of roles as listed in our article ‘Working under 16’ (under ‘Job Hunting’ from the left hand navigation). Then approach these companies leaving your CV if you have one. Register to www.myconnexions.co.uk for support to develop a CV, if you don’t already have one. Good luck, Connexions.

At 13 you most likely won’t have enough life experience to develop a CV properly. I would start from year 9 entering any part-time work, predicted qualifications and other activities outside of school/work such as involvement in community or voluntary groups. When you approach companies, together with a parent or carer, I would just leave a name and contact details. This way if an opportunity comes along an employer can contact you. Many Newsagents have waiting lists for paper rounds. You should also ask at yards, wash farms and local shops to see if there are any opportunities. Best of luck Connexions.

Hi, I’m afraid at the age of 12 you are legally too young to work. In most areas you will need to be at least 13, but in some areas it can be 14. Check with the Local Education Authority for Barking and Dagenham for more details. Connexions

Hi, we’d suggest you contact your local Connexions/Careers service http://www.haveringyouth.co.uk/connexions to get some further information, advice and guidance. This could include support with the development of CVs, covering letters and completing application forms. They can also provide advice on interview skills; further training courses and the best types of organisations to approach. Alternatively read our articles under our work section (available from the left-hand navigation under work). Connexions

Hi, we would suggest together with a parent/carer you approach local newsagents to see if there are any opportunities available. They may be happy for you to do the round together. If they don’t have an opportunity now they may have a waiting list so get your names down. Best of luck Connexions.

hey im 14 and i live near chester, i really want a summer job but dont know how to find one in my area what do i do?

If you are in year 11 you officially left school on the last Friday in June so although you are 15 you don not have to abide by the Child Protection laws. If you are 15 and turn 16 from the start of September 2011 you will need to abide by these laws. You should approach local companies, leave a CV if you can. You can also write to companies attaching your CV. Try using a directory such as ww.yell.com to help. For help with CV and letter writing register to www.myconnexions.co.uk. Best of luck Connexions

I NEED A PAPER ROUND

Posted - 05:32, 04 Aug 2011

Hi thanks for getting in touch. With a parent or carer we suggest you approach organisations in your local area that offer the type of work you are looking for e.g. newsagents, shops and the Evening Gazette. Best of Luck.

Hi, firstly it is worth you speaking with the child employment team on 01245 436743 to understand the hours you can work and the types of jobs that are safe for you to work in. Next, with your parents/carers, you make contact with local shops, paper shops, hairdressers, sports or entertainment venues to ask if they have any vacancies and leave them with your/parents contact details. If you are offered an interview or job later, always give your parents all the details. Good Luck.

Hi, thanks for your question. You wanted to know the least and most you could earn in a week. However, this would depend on the number of hours you work and the hourly wage you agreed with your employer. There is no national minimum wage for young people who are still in compulsory education and under the age of 16. However once you are over school leaving age and 16 the current minimum wage is 3.64 per hour. This changes in October, so check www.direct.gov.uk for more information. Check the number of hours you can work with the Child Employment Team on 01245 436743. Good Luck.

Hiya. I'm a 13 year old girl who lives in Hedge End. I really need to earn some cash but i dont know where to start! I would LOVE to try babysitting but i'm not old enough to start. I wouldn't mind getting a paper round but I live to far away from the local post office. I was wondering if you knew any local paper round companies that could do part time jobs and on weekdays. It might be easier if I could get the newspapers delivered to my door but I can't find anywhere that will accept. Please Help, I will check soon :)
