What are NVQs?

NVQs are practical qualifications which are based on the ability to do a job. Therefore these are work related qualifications and reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively. NVQs cover all the main aspects related to an occupation. These qualifications are valued by employers because they demonstrate that you have the high quality skills required for work within that field.

Starting an NVQ

NVQs do not have to be completed in a certain amount of time and can be taken in partnership with a work placement or job, as well as at school or F.E. College. There are no age limits or entry requirements but you would normally agree with your assessor which level to work towards by:

  • identifying what you can do already
  • analysing what you need to learn
  • choosing and agreeing activities that would allow you to learn what is required

How are NVQs assessed?

NVQs are usually assessed by on-the-job observations and questioning. To complete your assessment you need to evidence that you can meet the NVQ standards. Your assessor usually signs off units when they are satisfied that you have completed, and can evidence, all elements of each unit. Your assessor will test your knowledge, understanding and work-based performances.

What are the different levels?

There are five different levels of an NVQ and it is important that before starting an NVQ, you and your assessor discuss what level is best suited for you. It is good practice to identify what you can already do, discuss what you need to learn and then agree upon a suitable level which you will aim to achieve.

Level 1:
Basic knowledge, understanding and skills.

Level 2:
Builds knowledge and/or skills in relation to subject through a range of varied work activities.

Level 3:
Learning that involves in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills. Shows considerable responsibility, independence and guidance of others if required.

Level 4:
High level knowledge offering a broad range of technical or professional activities which show strong levels of responsibility and independence. Responsible for others and have the ability to allocate resources where needed.

Level 5:
Specialist learning with high levels of responsibility and accountability for yourself and others.
