You can now study a range of Vocational A level called General Certificate of Education (GCE) in applied subjects. These are designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills needed for work within the topic field."
How is an A level in an applied subject different to an A level?
Vocational A levels are different because of the way they are assessed. Unlike a normal A level there is no final written exam which accounts for 70% of your grade. Instead Vocational A levels are based upon units which are assessed by short projects, long assignments, unit tests, group and independent working. Work is done in units and is collected in a portfolio which is assessed as you go along. Each unit is graded and then converted into a points system which is then converted into an overall grade, the same grading system as an A level.
How does an A level in an applied subject compare to A levels?
Three unit Vocational A level = one AS level
Six unit Vocational A level = one regular A level
Twelve unit Vocational A level (Double Award) = two regular A levels
