What are my choices?
At the age of 18 you may wish to review key decisions about your future. You may decide to:
- continue in further education
- study a course at university (higher education)
- start work as an apprentice
- start earning money in a job you enjoy
- start earning money in a job with training
- take a gap year.
I want to continue in further education
You may wish to stay in further education in order to improve on the skills and qualifications you have already achieved. This could be in order to have the necessary qualifications to go on to higher education or enter a particular career path. It is also useful if you want to broaden your knowledge base or have decided you would like to pursue a different career path.
I want to go to university
There are different ways you can carry on learning, one popular choice is university. Think about applying for a university course if you need a degree or higher qualification to enter your chosen career. The earning potential of a graduate is greater than that of a non-graduate. There is an application process so visit UCAS for more information.
I want to start work as an apprentice
An Apprenticeship is a programme of training which leads to a recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are available at different levels and do not last for a fixed length of time; it is completed when all the necessary elements have been accomplished. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn on the job, whilst earning money.
I want to start work
You may decide that you want to start earning money; however it’s important that you choose a job that:
- you are interested in
- offers training such as an Apprenticeship, or a vocational qualification. Jobs with training offer you more progression opportunities, allowing you to earn more money in the future.
Visit the National Apprenticeship Service to search and apply for Apprenticeships.
I want to take a gap year
Many students decide to take a gap year before going on to university. You need to decide what you are going to use your gap year to do. Details of your plans included in your personal statement will support any deferred UCAS applications. A gap year can allow you:
- to re-sit exams so that you can achieve the entry grades you require for your chosen career path
- to do voluntary work - you can do this as part of a travelling expedition
- the chance to study abroad and understand new cultures
- to start earning money before going on to university.
