What are my choices?

At the age of 18 you will need to make key decisions about your future. You may decide to:

  • study a course at university
  • start work as an apprentice
  • take a gap year
  • start earning money in a job you enjoy

It is never too late to get help with making decisions about your future. You can contact your nearest Connexions Centre/One Stop Shop and talk confidentially to a Personal Adviser.

I want to go to university

There are different ways you can carry on learning, one popular choice is university. Think about applying for a university course if you need a degree or higher qualification to enter your chosen career. The earning potential of a graduate is better than that of a non-graduate. There is an application process so read our university section for more guidance.

I want to start work as an apprentice

An apprenticeship is a programme of training which leads to a recognised qualification. Apprenticeships are available at different levels and does not last for a fixed length of time; an apprenticeship is completed when all necessary elements have been accomplished. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn on the job, whilst earning money. Read our apprenticeship section for more information.

I want to take a gap year

Many students decide to take a gap year before going on to university, but you need to decide what you are going to use your gap year for. Gap years can allow you:

  • to re-sit exams so that you can achieve the entry grades you require for your chosen career path
  • to do voluntary work. You can do this as part of a travelling expedition
  • the chance to study abroad and understand new cultures
  • to start earning money before going on to university

Read our section on gap years and volunteering for more information.

I want to start work

It is important that you choose a job that:

  • you are interested in
  • offers training such as an apprenticeship, BTEC or a NVQ. Jobs with training offer you more progression opportunities, allowing you to earn more money in the future
