What is emotional well-being?

Emotional well-being or mental health is the term used when referring to your emotions, feelings and how we behave as a result of how we feel. Your emotional well-being can affect your underlying belief in you own and others’ self worth. This can include:

  • your level of confidence
  • the levels of stress you are under
  • how angry you get

What affects us emotionally?

There are so many things that can affect us emotionally and we all react in different ways. Some people develop eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia or overeating. Others may self-harm or develop anger issues.

Supporting someone with a mental illness

A person’s mental health can often be difficult to talk about and the symptoms can often be extreme. This can affect the way we react, because it’s difficult to know how to help. It is important that they talk to someone they trust who:

  • listens to them and is patient
  • is supportive and encourages them to get help
  • keeps an open mind

A person with a mental illness can get specialist help and support so encourage them to speak to their doctor or to contact a well-known support organisation such as:

Help Lines

  • Samaritans - 0845 7 90 90 90.
  • Childline - 0800 1111 (0800 400 222 textphone for young people who are hearing impaired).
